Bandits blast Watertown, earn state tourney berth

BROOKINGS, A seven-run second inning lifted the Bandits past host Post 17 and into the Class A American Legion Baseball State Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at Watertown Stadium.
Top-seeded Brookings (26-11), which won 12-7, takes on Watertown again in the Region 1A title game today at 4 p.m. Should Post 74 lose, a second championship contest would begin at 7

‘Chutes win state tourney opener

ABERDEEN, Trevor Wallen and Isaac Brandt combined on a four-hitter, and Sam McMacken belted a home run as the Brookings ‘Chutes opened the Junior Legion State Baseball Tournament with a 2-0 win over Brandon Valley on Wednesday at Fossum Field.

CLEAR LAKE, The Aurora A's hammered the Sisseton Redbirds 20-2 in seven innings during Eastern Dakota League amateur baseball action Wednesday night.
Aurora pounded out 21 hits. The A's scored five runs in the first inning, four in the second, one in the third, three in the fifth, two in the sixth and five in the seventh.

HURON, Brookings' Brooke Piearson won her age division and Sioux Falls golfer Max Donohue made history at the SDGA Junior Championships on Tuesday at Broadland Creek Golf Course.

BROOKINGS, South Dakota State tennis coach Michael Engdahl announced the signing of four recruits for the 2014-15 season. Elif Gabb and Maria Laura Velazco Fasce will join the women's squad, while Marco Paulo Castro and Stefano Blatt are set to join the Jackrabbit men.

Jackrabbits release 2014-15 basketball schedules

BROOKINGS, The South Dakota State men's basketball team released its 2014-15 schedule, which includes 13 home games along with a game against Florida Gulf Coast on Nov. 30 at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls.
The Jackrabbits also play in a three-team tournament hosted by Utah State in December, where they play the host Aggies, Idaho State and CSU Bakersfield.

BROOKINGS, Century 21 split a pair of games last week and won the Little League majors baseball regular-season title with a 14-2 record.
Century 21 beat BraVo's 18-10 on Tuesday, July 15, but dropped its finale 12-5 to Superior Homes on Thursday, July 17.
Superior Homes also beat Pizza Ranch 10-9 on Tuesday.

GARRETSON, Volga Post 114 fell to Madison, 6-3, on Saturday afternoon in an elimination game of the Region 2B baseball tournament in Garretson.
Volga took an early 2-1 lead on four hits in the bottom of the first inning but wouldn't score again until a solo home run from Kyler Krogh in the bottom of the ninth.

BROOKINGS, The top-seeded Brookings Bandits enter Region 1A play on Tuesday needing two wins to advance to the State American Legion Class A Tournament.
The Region 1A Tournament, scheduled for Tuesday through Thursday at Watertown Stadium, comes down to winning two games before you lose two games in the double-elimination format tournament.

Post 114, 7-16 on the season, plays Madison at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday in an elimination game.
