‘Chutes hammer Aberdeen to stay alive at state tourney

WATERTOWN, The 'Chutes bounced back in a big way, putting up 10 runs in the third frame en route to a 14-1, five-inning victory over Aberdeen in a South Dakota Class A State Junior Legion Baseball Tournament elimination game Thursday at Watertown Stadium.
Ryan Miley went 3-for-3 with two doubles and five RBIs to pace Brookings' 13-hit attack.

Watertown wins Region 1A title

BROOKINGS, Watertown rallied past Renner 9-8 in the second championship game to win the Region 1A American Legion Baseball Tournament on Thursday at Bob Shelden Field.
Fourth-seeded Post 17 entered the day with a 2-0 record in the tourney but lost the first title game 4-2 to the top-seeded Royals.

BROOKINGS, Senior-to-be Grant Smith was named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar by the Golf Coaches Association of America Wednesday.
Smith joins former Jackrabbits Trent Peterson (2007-08 and 2008-09) and David Smith (2011-12) as Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars.

Holm shot 3-under 69 at BCC on Saturday and closed with a 6-over 76 at Edgebrook on Sunday for a one-stroke victory.

BROOKINGS, It was a pitchers' duel at Bob Shelden on Friday night at Joey Texley of the Cubs and Curt Johnson of the Aurora A's squared off in amateur baseball action.
