Sixty-four South Dakota Army National Guard soldiers assigned to the Brookings-based 139th Brigade Support Battalion will deploy to Iraq in 2011 for support of Operation New Dawn.
Following mobilization in June, the guardsmen will receive additional training at Fort Hood, Texas, before going overseas.
While the unit's specific mission in Iraq was not being disclosed, the 139th BSB is capable of providing logistical and maintenance support to a maneuver brigade and its reinforcement units. The 139th also has a headquarters and headquarters detachment that can provide command and control, administration, training and logistical support for five companies and four detachments in the SDANG.
The BSB has a total of about 545 soldiers assigned, with units in Brookings, Mitchell, Redfield, Watertown, Sioux Falls and Rapid City. The deploying soldiers will be from some of these detachments.
