Search for a birth mother: ‘A piece of me was missing’

Posted: Friday, Nov 1st, 2013

Don Jones of Volga got a birthday surprise this year: for the first time in 46 years, he was able to talk to his mother. An adoptee, Jones had been searching for more than 15 years before he was reunited with his birth mother, Suzanne Larson. A phone call on his birthday, Sept. 18, initiated the reunion, and the two were able to get together in person less than two weeks later.

BROOKINGS – When the nurse took her newborn from the delivery room, Suzanne knew she might never see him again.

She was only 20 – unmarried and with no way to support the two of them.

She had agreed to give the baby up for adoption, and just 27 minutes after she gave birth, they took the infant away.

It was the most loving thing a mother could do, to see him placed with a good, stable family, she reasoned, but for her it was heart-wrenching.

Don Jones grew up knowing he was adopted, and he never escaped the feeling that part of him was missing, even after he’d started his own family.

He was able to fill that void a few weeks ago.

On his birthday – 46 years to the day they were separated – Don Jones finally had a chance to talk with his biological mother.

“Our connection as mother and son was instantaneous,” says Jones, who lives in Volga. “Even on the phone before we actually met, we said we felt like we had known each other for years.”
