Making fitness a family affair

Lang Wedemeyer pushed a stroller carrying his two younger children, Caroline and Hunter, through the Jack 15 race this September. The race was just one more opportunity for the Wedemeyer family to spend time together while doing something they enjoy.

BROOKINGS – This year’s Jack 15 was wet and windy, and Lang Wedemeyer had committed to running that Sept. 28 race with a double stroller in front of him, pushing two of his kids along the 15.2-miles from White to the Campanile in Brookings. It was one of those days when it would have been easier to skip the family bonding and leave the kids home to watch Saturday morning cartoons.

Wedemeyer, head women’s soccer coach for South Dakota State University, recalls how the blankets covering Caroline, 4, and Hunter, 3, kept blowing off during that race.

“They weren’t real happy on that ride,” he said, chuckling at the memory. “There was a probably seven- or eight-mile stretch that was into the wind and the rain, and then there’s two miles on gravel road which, because of the rain, was mud. So, we were pushing through that as well.”
