Ron Larsen: Squeezing sweet sounds in Bruce

Ron Larsen limbers up his 51-year-old Hohner button-box accordion. The Bruce musician last month won his second accordion championship at Yankton’s Old Time Fiddle Contest and Jamboree.

BROOKINGS – What’s not to like about an accordion?

It’s almost always happy music – something to twirl your girl and hoist a glass to – and there’s something infectious about that reedy, wheezy sound.

Whether you’re 10 years old or 85, it makes you want to tap your toes.

“I just love playing the accordion,” Ron Larsen says with a grin. “They’re fun!”

“I love playing the accordion!” he says again for emphasis,

And well he should – he’s good at it. The Bruce squeezebox aficionado was just named an accordion champ at the 41st annual South Dakota Old-Time Fiddle Contest and Jamboree.
