Singsaas Lutheran Church hosted hundreds of visitors at its recent Pumpkin Festival.

• Small country congregation reaching out to new members

BROOKINGS – In January of 2010, Singsaas Lutheran Church left the ELCA and struck out on its own. Many wondered what the future would hold for the small country church in the northeast corner of Brookings County, which had been established by Norwegian immigrants in 1874.

Trygve Trooien, a lifetime member and then-president of the congregation, said participation was shrinking before they cut ties with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. A majority of members decided the organization had become too liberal for them.

“At that point, we were down to about 15 members coming every week, so a change was imminent; we knew we had to do something,” Trooien said. “We were faced with the situation that we either had to make some kind of a change that would interest more people or close the doors.”
