Returning to civilian life

• Brookings native talks about heading back to work, school after a year in Afghanistan

BROOKINGS – Sandra Sprecher answers quickly when asked to describe her deployment spent building bridges in Afghanistan: “Groundhog Day, every day,” she says.

But returning from deployment and reentering life as a wife, an employee and a student, that’s different.

Sprecher, 22, is a Brookings native (her maiden name is Lunt). She joined the Guard in 2008, while still in high school, and was trained as a dental assistant with the South Dakota Medical Command of Rapid City.

When she deployed from May 2011 to May 2012, it was under a request for friendly forces, as a combat engineer. She was one of 184 people in the 200th Engineer Company of the S.D. Army National Guard.
