BROOKINGS – Brookings High School students will sport a new photo ID card this year, a measure school leaders say aims to keep the school safe and to make some tasks more convenient.
Shelly Jensen, BHS vice principal, said Monday that the new ID cards are meant mainly for safety as students enter the building during the school day.
“When students enter our building, especially in the south entrance, there is a camera over there and our secretaries beep students in,” Jensen said. “Previously, until this year, we just assume they’re students.”
Secretaries can’t memorize the face of every student, so they haven’t been able to know for sure whether everyone waiting at the door to get in really belongs in the building.
“Now this year, they’ll have to show their photo ID and they will be allowed into the building,” Jensen said.
