Mr. Mayor

Posted: Friday, Aug 2nd, 2013

These expressions of Brookings’s tech-savvy mayor Tim Reed were captured on his “Faces of Brookings” YouTube video, produced by the Brookings Area Chamber of Commerce.

• Brookings moves forward on bold, fresh ideas, mayor says

Editor’s note: This is the second in a series of “getting-to-know-you” profiles of Brookings personalities.

BROOKINGS – Call the mayor of Brookings a geek and he doesn’t bat an eye.

Guilty, says a smiling Tim Reed, as he settles into a comfy chair in his second-floor office in the Brookings government center.

“I grew up being a geek when being a geek wasn’t cool,” Reed confesses. “I had a TRS-80.” (It was a Radio Shack microcomputer, one of the first mass-market personal computers, and any self-respecting geek in the early 1980s had to have one.)

“I don’t want to call my son a geek,” the mayor says, “but he’s following in my footsteps in a lot of ways – very much into computers and that kind of stuff. It’s amazing what he can do with computers.”

More than any other council member, Reed is computer-savvy, a man of the Digital Age – he posts regularly to his Facebook page and he tweets to a small army of Twitter followers.
