Hwy. 14 rebuild to create seven-lane crossroad

BROOKINGS – Rush-hour traffic at the city’s busiest intersection will be a lot smoother in a few years, Brookings City Council members learned Tuesday.

With the ongoing reconstruction on U.S. Highway 14 on the western edge of Brookings, councilors asked city staff for a briefing on what was going to happen on the other side of town – specifically at the intersection of Sixth Street – Highway 14 – and 22nd Avenue.

City Manager Jeff Weldon noted that while the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) plans are still fluid, the latest version of that intersection would include a total of seven traffic lanes for the northbound and eastbound quadrants, and that should result in a dramatic improvement in traffic flow.
