Mary, Mary, quite contrary ...

Ken Curley/Register

… How does your garden grow? Not very well this week, because most of it is under water. These are some of the submerged plots at the city’s Douglas Chittick Community Gardens. The tomatoes and marigolds here will have to contend with wet feet until Six-Mile Creek recedes a bit more. Some of the plantings will likely be lost, but others should survive. In either case, gardeners will be getting their mudboots out and trooping back to work this week.

As of this morning, the flood warning remained in effect until 8:30 p.m. CDT for the Big Sioux River at both Bruce and Brookings. But local weather-watchers say both the Big Sioux and Six-Mile Creek have crested, and barring additional heavy rains in Brookings or the White area, the county will be able to dry out over the next couple of days.

A chance for showers and thunderstorms remains in the forecast, mostly after 4 p.m. today, but the rest of the week through Sunday should produce nothing but sunny skies.
