Are Brookings pet owners responsible?

Spay, neuter still job No. 1, local experts say

BROOKINGS In her nearly 40 years of living in rural Brookings, Peg Wenande has seen the dark side of pet ownership too many times it finally prompted her to write a letter to the editor; it was published in The Brookings Register on May 6 ("Too many irresponsible pet owners").

Her letter began, "A vehicle drives out into the country, finds a gravel road, opens the vehicle door and drops their family pet into the ditch and speeds off."

Her letter in turn prompted the Register to look into the issue of pet ownership both responsible and irresponsible more closely. In a phone conversation earlier this week, Wenande talked about actions that she and her husband, Richard, have taken in the aftermath of irresponsible pet ownership when they've encountered it or had it thrust upon them.
