• Name of victim, alone in vehicle, not released
BROOKINGS – A Brookings woman was killed in a single-vehicle rollover about five miles north of the city Friday morning.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is not releasing the name or age of the victim yet, pending notification of family.
SDHP Sgt. Scott Knisley said authorities were dispatched to the scene on 472nd Avenue at 10:50 a.m. Friday.
The woman was alone in her 2003 Suzuki Grand Vitara, driving south on the gravel road between 205th and 206th streets, when her vehicle crossed the center of the road, went out of control and entered the east ditch. The SUV rolled, ejecting the driver, who suffered fatal injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Knisley said the woman was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. It does not appear that alcohol or speed were factors in the rollover, he added.
The Brookings County Sheriff’s Department, Brookings Ambulance and Brookings Fire Department all assisted at the scene Friday.
An investigation is ongoing by the highway patrol.
