• Local group details ‘Empowerment Project’ for city council
BROOKINGS – A local nonprofit group, the Brookings Empowerment Project Inc., wants to establish a group home in the community for individuals suffering from mental illness.
Kathleen Holleman, speaking for NAMI Brookings – the local chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness – told city councilors Tuesday that her organization is working on plans for supportive housing for the mentally ill.
“I think it’s very important to note that Brookings is the only large city in South Dakota that doesn’t have this type of facility,” she said.
