Leaving youth in good hands

• After 37 years overseeing county’s juvenile matters, mental commitments, Kratochvil retires today

BROOKINGS – It was mid February 1976 when Mark Kratochvil, a Brookings native, took the part-time job of Brookings County deputy state’s attorney. He became deputy to Clyde Calhoon, who was and still is the county’s state’s attorney.

“When I came here right out of law school, I was offered the part-time position of deputy state’s attorney and also was taken into Clyde’s private practice at that time,” Kratochvil said.

Today, at age 61, he retires from that job.

“It’s been a great experience,” he said.
