Nursing mothers find support in Brookings

If you’re not a new mom, you may be surprised by the amount of support offered to breastfeeding moms in the Brookings area. BROOKINGS – It was 1956 in America, when no proper person used the word “breast” and mothers were told their own milk likely would be inadequate to nourish their baby. The nationwide breastfeeding rate had dropped close to 20 percent.

That’s when seven women in Franklin Park, Ill., convinced that nature had given mothers everything they needed to feed their babies, founded La Leche League.

A lot has happened since then.

“It was from that initial group of women that eventually came this idea that this is a specialty that we need to recognize. We need to develop a course of study and ultimately a way to have these people take an exam, as a way of verification of their specialized body of knowledge,” said Lois Tschetter, speaking certified lactation consultants (CLC).
