• Brookings coffee roasting business a product of friendship, love of good joe
BROOKINGS – Somehow, we all know that Lutherans drink weak coffee. Carol VanLiere, manager of the Mission Coffeeshop at First Lutheran Church, admits to it. And Kurt Osborne, co-owner of the new Kool Beans Coffee company in Brookings, said he jokingly calls it “WELCA water.”
Osborne thinks many of these Lutheran coffeemakers are just trying to be good stewards of their coffee grounds.
“I actually served a coffee to a lady at a church function, and I said ‘Would you like some more coffee?’ and she goes, ‘Yeah,’” Osborne said, relaying the wonderment in the woman’s tone.
“And I go, ‘What are you drinking?’ And she goes, ‘Well this is decaf. … I didn’t know decaf had flavor!’”
