City pushes forward on airport realignment

• Addition to Phase I work will save the city money; council closes portion of W. 16th near runway

BROOKINGS – An unexpectedly low bid on Phase I of the Brookings Airport runway expansion and relocation means the city can get a head start on additional airport work – and at a lower cost than anticipated.

City Manager Jeff Weldon reminded councilors Tuesday that the September 2012 bid for the first phase of the runway realignment came in at $4.7 million, some 32 percent below engineering estimates of $7 million.

“Because of that,” Weldon told the council, “we were able to receive a grant from the federal government that anticipated the full amount ($7 million).”
