Swiftel expansion not happening ... for now

With a convention center and a Courtyard by Marriott hotel immediately to the east of the current structure, this is what the Swiftel Center might have looked like in 2014. But the plan proposed by the Hegg Companies of Sioux Falls has proven to be economically unfeasible, and the project has been mothballed for possible development in the future. • Plan would have added conference facilities, hotel to city-owned center

BROOKINGS – “Insufficient market strength” was the reason given for the shutdown of a Swiftel Center hotel and conference center plan proposed by a Sioux Falls developer.

The City of Brookings announced Thursday afternoon that the proposed expansion of the Swiftel Center with conference facilities and an attached Courtyard by Marriott Hotel will not proceed at the present time.

The construction would have been financed and built by the Hegg Companies of Sioux Falls, in partnership with the Sioux Falls-based Lloyd Companies and Praireland Partners of Brookings.
