BROOKINGS – Tuesday’s city council session won’t be a jam-packed meeting – it’s mostly a “housekeeping” session – but it will be highlighted by the appearance of a group of Brookings kids.

Mayor Tim Reed will present the annual Martin Luther King Day Awards. To mark the birthday of the civil rights leader, the Brookings Human Rights Committee sponsored a poster contest for elementary students and an essay contest for middle school and high school grades to help students reflect on King’s ideas and their impact on the community.

This year’s theme for the poster contest was “We may all have come on different ships, but we’re in the same boat now.” The essay contest focused on the quote: “An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity.”
