BROOKINGS – A well-used downtown building has seen its last occupant. The Brookings Fire Department is moving on, to a new training center that will cost much less to maintain, and the old fire hall is set to be demolished.

Fire Chief Darrell Hartmann said last week that his department is on its way out of the old fire hall at the corner of Third Street and Third Avenue, and mostly into the new hall on 20th Avenue. The new hall is attached to the East Fire Station, just west of McCrory Gardens; that station also houses administrative offices for the department’s three paid employees.

“Basically, what we have here is what we already had,” Hartmann said. “It’s just, that building was built in the early 1930s and, over the past several years, the city’s been putting roughly $50,000 into the old building."
