County works to improve area fire dept. radio coverage

BROOKINGS – Brookings County is making some headway in its plans to correct spotty coverage on the handheld radios used by its fire departments.

Todd Struwe, director of the county’s emergency management department, told Brookings County commissioners last week that he has some quotes for putting up an additional repeater that would relay messages from the dispatcher in Brookings to volunteer firefighters throughout the county.

Struwe said later that the fire departments have been using their current system for 15 or more years. The “portable,” or handheld radios do not always get reception, but the “mobile” or truck-based radios that use a large antenna still work well. He said hills, especially in the eastern part of the county, hurt coverage for the portable radios.
