New wreath program to honor local vets

Volunteers for Wreaths Across America pause to honor the veterans whose graves they will decorate with a wreath. BROOKINGS – In 1992, a wreath company owner named Morrill Worcester of Harrington, Maine found himself with a surplus of wreaths nearing the end of the holiday season.

“As a boy, he had been to Arlington (National) Cemetery and was really moved by the gravesite and the cemetery and everything,” said Travis Rust, senior member of the Brookings-based Big Sioux Composite Squadron of Civil Air Patrol.

“So later, as a businessman, he decided that he had extra wreaths and he wanted to do something with them. So, then he thought back to Arlington and he worked on decorating the graves.”
