Attention on a cappella

The a cappella group Six Appeal, which is based in Minneapolis, gives a workshop at Camelot Intermediate School Thursday morning. The group met with students at Camelot and Mickelson Middle School Thursday, and is at BHS today. Each session was tailored to the age of students.

At Camelot, the vocalists gave a history of a capella music, beginning with the Gregorian chant and ending with contemporary a capella, which is what the group sings. Six Appeal also introduced each vocal part its members sing to the kids, and gave them a quick lesson in beat boxing.

The workshops were sponsored by Brookings PTA groups and by some families. Camelot music teacher Missy Sagmoe said Camelot does not have a choir for students, but students who like to sing can audition after school right now for the honors choir held in February at South Dakota State University.

Six Appeal will be in concert tonight at Brookings High School, as a fundraiser for the BHS choir program. The concert begins at 7 p.m., with tickets for sale at the door: $5 for kids, $10 for adults.
