South Dakota State remains undefeated in conference play, sweeps Kansas City

Jackrabbits sweep Roos to improve to 8-0 in Summit League

BROOKINGS — The South Dakota State Jackrabbits remained undefeated in Summit League play after sweeping a three-game series with Kansas City at Jackrabbit Stadium on Friday and Saturday.

The wins helped the Jackrabbits improve to 8-0 and 24-18 overall heading into next weekend’s three-game series at North Dakota State.

FRIDAY

Game One

SDSU 8, Kansas City 1

The Jackrabbits jumped out to an early lead thanks to some aggressive baserunning by Mia Jarecki. Jarecki led off the bottom fo the first inning with a single and worked her way to third base while Lindsey Culver drew a walk and a stolen base to put runners on first and third base.

Rozelyn Carrillo drove both runners in with a one-out single and later scored on Brooke Dumont’s single later in the first inning to help the Jacks take a 3-0 lead.

The Roos cut into the lead with Briona Woods’s solo home run in the top of the fourth inning but the Jacks’ bats got going again in the fifth inning, scoring five times to break the game open.

Emma Osmundson led off the inning with a solo home run and Culver followed with a double before Rozelyn Carrillo reached on a fielding error. Culver scored on a wild pitch by Roos reliever Bailey Brumley and Dumont drove in her second run of the game to put SDSU up 5-1.

After Culver scored on a wild pitch, Madi Conklin drove in two runs with a sacrifice fly for their final run of the game.

That was more than enough for Tori Kniesche, who allowed three hits on one run and a walk with 10 strikeouts to earn the complete game victory.

Game Two

SDSU 5, Kansas City 2

Dumont opened the scoring in Friday’s nightcap with a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning but Kansas City took the lead with Lauren Parker’s RBI double and Abby Husak’s RBI single in the top of the fifth inning.

With the Jacks down 2-1, Conklin opened the bottom of the fifth inning with a single before Mia Jarecki and Osmundson loaded the bases with back-to-back walks. Rozelyn Carrillo drove everyone home with a triple off the right field wall to put SDSU ahead 4-2 and Dumont drove her home in the following at bat with an RBI single.

Shannon Lasey took things home from there allowing two earned runs on six hits and a walk with three strikeouts to earn the win.

Dumont finished 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI singles while Conklin finished 2-for-3 at the plate.

SATURDAY

SDSU 11, Kansas City 1 (5 Innings)

The Jacks made quick work of the Roos in the series finale riding their offense and another strong start by Kniesche to complete the sweep.

Husak gave Kansas City an early lead after scoring on Jarecki’s error in the top of the first inning, but SDSU rebounded to take the lead on Dumont’s two-run double in the bottom of the first inning.

Jocelyn Carrillo made it a 3-1 game with a solo home run in the top of the second before Osmundson smashed a grand slam through 25 mph winds to give SDSU a 7-1 lead.

Culver, Rozelyn Carrillo and Alli Boyle each delivered RBI singles and Dumont drove in a run on a ground out to give the Jacks an 11-1 lead and Kniesche did the rest, allowing one unearned runs on four hits and two walks with eight strikeouts to improve to 12-5 on the season.

Culver went 2-for-2 with two runs scored, an RBI and a walk in the win while Jarecki went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Dumont went 1-for-3 with a double and three RBI while Conklin went 1-for-2 with a run scored.
