Sandra Van Essen

It is with heartfelt sorrow and cherished memories that we announce the peaceful passing of Sandra Lee Palazeke Van Essen, affectionately known as Sandy, at the age of 80. Sandy departed from this world on Thursday, Feb. 29, 2024, to join her beloved husband, Bernard Van Essen, and her parents, Stephen Palazeke and Elizabeth De Boer Palazeke, in eternal peace in the comfort of her home in Aurora.
Funeral services for Sandy will be held on Saturday, March 9, with visitations from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., followed by the funeral at 11:30 a.m. A lunch will follow, where loved ones can gather to share stories and honor the beautiful life of Sandy.
Born on Nov. 29, 1943, in Schenectady, New York, Sandy’s zest for life and love for her family were her defining characteristics. She led a life that was as vibrant as the gardens she so meticulously cared for. A voracious reader to the end, Sandy found joy and escape in the pages of countless books, imparting her love of literature to all around her.
Sandy will be lovingly remembered for the profound pride she had in her children. Sandy is survived by her children, Stacy Van Essen and Michael (Michelle) Van Essen; grandchildren, Brooks (Sarah) and Kristen; sister-in-law’s Cindy (Dale) Velhuizen and Myrna Mulford and brother-in-law Arlyn Van Essen. Her absence will be felt by her cousins, Russell Pool and Becky Pool Mickelberg, who will miss her unwavering support and the unique bond that they shared. The legacy of her kindness, wisdom, and nurturing spirit will forever live on through them.
Those who knew Sandra will remember her for the joy she brought into their lives. Her playful engagement was a daily delight, especially through the Wordle challenges she eagerly sent to her loved ones.
Her love for travel was infectious, and she often embarked on adventures abroad with her daughter Stacey, creating memories that will be treasured forever. Each trip was a story, each destination a new chapter in her book of life.
Friends and family will recall her birthday chalkboard, a small yet significant expression of her creativity and love. Her birthday wishes were a highlight for many, a tradition that brought smiles and warmth to friends and family alike.
Sandy’s companionship with her beloved dog, Baxter, was a source of joy and comfort. Their bond was a beautiful testament to her caring nature and capacity for love.
Sandy’s brightness will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Her influence and spirit will continue to be felt by the many lives she touched.
