Jackrabbits light it up in Friday meets

South Dakota State performs well at NDSU Spring Classic, USD Early Bird meet

FARGO, N.D. — South Dakota State track and field pieced together dominant performances across two different meets in Fargo and Vermillion on Friday, including numerous top 10 and all-time performances.

NDSU Spring Classic

The men’s 100-meter dash was one of the best events for SDSU on the day, as all four athletes running new personal bests with three of the times joining the SDSU All-Time List.

Jake Werner blazed his way down the track, running the second fastest time in school history with a 10.27 to win the event. Drew Olson followed close behind in 10.41 seconds to take second overall and the third fastest time on record and Hudson Schroeder was fourth with a 10.50 to tie for seventh in SDSU history. Andrew Law also ran a PR of 11.09 for 12th.

Evan Henderon clocked a 21.91 for fifth in the 200-meter with Carter Toews (21.92) in sixth and Olson (22.13) in eighth.

In the 110-meter hurdles, Carter Johnson claimed runner-up in a personal best 14.69 seconds. Gunnder Gunderson (14.81, event debut) was third, Ryan Benson (14.81, PR) came fourth, Ben Morningstar (15.36, event debut) came fifth and Aiden Voss (15.55, PR) took sixth.

Jeremiah Donahoe ran a personal best of 55.05 for second as Gunderson finished third with his event debut time of 59.12 for third in the 400-meter hurdles.

Benson claimed sixth in the long jump with a PR of 22-06.50 as Rylan McDonnell was eighth with a 22-02.50.

Tristen Hanna then took third overall in the triple jump with his mark of 46-04.00 while in the pole vault, Matt Katz finished second with a 15-03.00 and Ryan Karajanis cleared 14-03.25 for third.

Connor Powers cleared a height of 6-06.25 for second place in the high jump as Carson Kirwan finishes fourth with a 6-04.25.

Lee Reiser finished second in the shot put with a 52-03.75 while Benson threw a mark of 155-09.00 for a fourth place finish in the javelin.

Ethan Fischer recorded a big PR of 180-04.00 as he won the discus throw with the second-best mark in school history. He now sits 19th in the NCAA West Region. Caiden Fredrick (167-09.00, PR) also finished third as Ryan Hackbart (148-03.00, PR) came sixth.

Hunter Wallster was runner-up of the hammer throw as he threw a 183-09.00. Fredrick was third with a PR of 155-01.00 and Hackbart threw a 140-07.00 for seventh.

The men’s 4x100-meter relay team of Olson, Werner, Toews and Henderson won the event with the eighth fastest time in school history.

On the women’s side of action, Maggie Madsen ran an 11.85 for first in the 100-meter dash and the fifth fastest time in school history. Rich-Ann Archer clocked an 11.99 for second and Cora Shull ran a PR of 12.85 for sixth.

Katelyn Darnell clocked a 15.26 for seventh in the 100-meter hurdles as Robyn Dayton ran a 17.68 for 11th.

Eight Jackrabbits competed in the women’s 200-meter dash, led by Archer in second place with a 24.65. Madsen (24.77) was third, Emily Rystrom (25.33) came fourth and Erika Kuntz (25.62) took fifth. Jessica Boekelheide (25.77, seventh), Darnell (26.62, ninth), Shull (26.93, PR, 10th) and Dayton (30.04, 12th) rounded out the competitors.

Abby Hughes finished seventh in the 400-meter hurdles with a clocking of 1:07.39.

Laci Leverty won the pole vault with her outdoor PR height of 12-01.50, which is now the sixth best mark in school history. This is the second straight week that Leverty has improved her outdoor PR and climbed the All-Time List.

In the triple jump, Camryn Brinkman took seventh with a mark of 36-01.50 as Apryl Adderley (35-04.75) finished eighth and Emma Smith (35-03.75) was ninth.

Boomsma went on to win the long jump with her leap of 19-03.25 while Layne Kirkendoll joined her in the event finals and took seventh with a 17-10.25.

Madison Kizer was runner-up in the high jump with a mark of 5-05.25 while Kirkendoll finished third with a 5-03.25. Also competing, Taylor Jochum (4-11.50) came fifth and Hadley Carlson (4-11.50) took sixth.

Nora Peterson won the javelin throw with her personal best of 144-04.00 to maintain fourth on the SDSU All-Time List. Josie Curry was fifth with 111-10.00 and Taylor Haring claimed ninth with a 94-09.00.

Three personal bests were reached in the discus throw, as Kaitlynn Bot (126-05.00, sixth), Curry (124-10.00, seventh) and Lydia Hill (101-01.00, 11th) all reached new best marks.

The women’s 4x400-meter relay ‘A’ team ran a time of 3:47.00 to take first overall in the event.

USD Early Bird

Christian Noble made headlines for the men in Vermillion, winning the 5000-meter run after crossing the finish line in a time of 15:03.55.

Sam Castle clocked a time of 1:55.23 for 10th in the 800-meter run, closely followed behind by Sean Murphy (1:56.07, 12th) and Andrew Moeller (1:57.52, 15th).

Three men competed in the 1500-meter, as Luke Johnson (4:03.25) was 13th, Cormick Logue (4:03.62) was 14th and Tyler O’Neill (4:15.47) was 45th.

In women’s action, Laura Bogue took ninth overall in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.96.

Grace Waage led six Jacks to the top 20 in the 800-meter run, winning the event in 2:15.23. Reese Luze took fourth in 2:18.13, Nicole Greyer was sixth with a 2:18.50 and Harley Fischer clocking a 2:18.53 for seventh. Hannah Spoden (2:19.55, 12th) and Emma Ecker (2:21.65, 18th) rounded out the top 20 finishers.

Three Jacks finished in the top 20 of the 1500-meter with Jenna Soine in 12th after running a 4:51.86. Emma Gonzalez came 13th with a personal best time of 4:52.19 and Ecker ran a 4:53.55 for 15th.

Kayla Christopherson ran an 11:07.08 to finished as runner-up in the 3000-meter steeplechase as Nina Dawson took ninth in 11:36.65.

In the 5000-meter, Kadense Dooley finished 12th overall with a time of 18:40.64 as Hannah Neusch clocked a 19:45.30 for 28th.

A look ahead

SDSU will split between four meets next week, beginning April 11 out in California with action to follow in Vermillion on Saturday.
