VOLGA — An 80-year-old Brookings man was airlifted to Sioux Falls after an accident Saturday in which he was driving an off-road vehicle in Volga, according to the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
The accident was reported at 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Highway 14 and Caspian Avenue in Volga, said Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring.
“Alcohol is believed to be a factor and charges are pending,” he added.
“(Deputies) found that 80-year-old Emil Misar was traveling eastbound on the shoulder of Highway 14 just west of Caspian Avenue in Volga in a 2006 Polaris Ranger. The Polaris Ranger then came across the two eastbound lanes of Highway 14 in front of a 2011 Ford Explorer driven by 66-year-old Karen Vostad (of Volga). The vehicles then collided,” Sebring said.
Misar was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the Polaris Ranger and received serious injuries, Sebring said.
“He was transported by the Brookings Ambulance and later airlifted to Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls,” Sebring said.
The Polaris Ranger was totaled; the Explorer sustained $5,000 worth of damage.
The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
