High school students from across the region attended the second session of the Summer Journalism Institute hosted by South Dakota State University June 15 through June 18.

The four-day program featured newspaper and moviemaking workshops designed to give students hands-on experience with industry professionals.

The majority of the 19 participants were high school students, with a few college students and teachers joining them.

"I'll be teaching a journalism class for the first time in years this fall and would like to know a little bit more than my students on day one," said Shelly Charging, an English teacher at Standing Rock High School in Fort Yates, N.D.

SDSU journalism professor Lyle Olson taught the newspaper segment of the Institute, giving students hands-on experience in newswriting, editing and design. After completing several workshops, participants combined their recently acquired skills to produce an example newspaper.

Students enrolled in the moviemaking portion of the Institute learned to edit video, create titles and incorporate music and sound effects into video once they were introduced to cameras and microphones. Participants learned to storyboard, or plan the sequence of the story, as they shot and edited a short movie.

"I had little interest in editing film until I learned how creative and surprisingly enjoyable the process can be," said Brandon Burnette, a mass communications graduate student who participated in the workshop.

Current school access to video equipment creates a greater need for students and teachers to become educated in the processes of moviemaking.

"I was amazed to see how creative people were in such a compressed amount of time," said SDSU film professor Jeff Heinle, who taught the moviemaking workshop.
