Motorcycle, bicycle collide at intersection
Posted: Tuesday, Jun 30th, 2009

Every parent's nightmare is to hear that his or her child has been injured in a traffic accident. Luckily, on Friday, everything ended all right.

Twelve-year-old Emberlyn Hinshaw might have been seriously injured when she rolled through the intersection at 20th Street and Main Avenue South.

She was riding her bicycle east on 20th Street when she rode through without stopping, according to Detective Brett Spencer of the Brookings Police Department.

An approaching motorcycle rider saw Emberlyn and tried to stop, but it wasn't in time to avoid a collision.

Rodney Fish, a 55-year-old Colorado man, was heading southbound on Main and immediately hit his brakes when he saw the bicyclist, and he attempted to turn left to avoid hitting her, according to the accident report.

Emberlyn, who was not wearing a helmet, was taken to the emergency room at the Brookings hospital and released a few hours later with minor injuries consisting of bruises and scrapes. Fish didn't sustain any injuries. The 2006 Harley Davidson Ultra Classic motorcycle Fish was riding received an estimated $1,000 worth of damage , according to Brookings police. Neither cyclist was cited in the accident. Emberlyn told her parents she didn't see any traffic, and that's why she rode through the stop sign. According to her father, William Hinshaw, Emberlyn was lucky not to have received more serious injuries. The accident report noted that Fish was estimated to be traveling at about 35 miles per hour when he spotted the bicyclist.

"She was bounced around on the road," Hinshaw added. "But fortunately, she suffered very little damage compared to what it could have been. She's a little sore still.

"I guess it's one of those things … with motorcycles, a lot of people just don't register them as a danger. You see them, but you just don't register (them) as being present.'
