• Brookings legislators take look at upcoming 88th Session

BROOKINGS – Over the past few years, money – or the lack of it – has been the defining issue of South Dakota’s legislative sessions.

When the Capitol doors swing open at noon Tuesday for the start of the Legislature’s 88th Session, money will still be the most important issue lawmakers will have to wrestle with.

Past budget cuts have damaged some programs, like education, and many legislators and citizens alike are hoping the projected increase in state revenues will bring some of them back to a healthier status.

“It’ll come down to following the money,” says Rep. Spence Hawley of Brookings, “finding the dollars and parceling them out.”
