Rural Brookings residents Neil and Sue Thomas pose for a photo with their newly-expanded family, from left to right: Dagi, 6; Josiah, 6; Spencer, 15; Deborah, 12; Morgan, 17; Aster, 8 and Cameron, 8. After a long process and four trips to Ethiopia, the Thomases brought home their four adopted children within the past year and a half.

• After seven years in waiting, the Thomas family is all together this Christmas

All I really want for Christmas is someone to tuck me in

A shoulder to cry on if I lose, shoulders to ride on if I win

There's so much I could ask for, but there's just one thing I need

All I really want for Christmas is a family

BROOKINGS – Twenty years and seven children later, Neil and Sue Thomas can look back and see how God was planting seeds for their family as it is today.

But the process that brought four children from across the globe into the family has been a long one, and they say it’s taught them to rely more on the God who knows and heals all wounds, and who guides them each step of the way.

“Our adoption story isn’t that we just sent in the papers to a certain country and then brought home the child,” Sue said.

“It was a lot of twists and turns and back and forth and a lot of waiting and patience to say, ‘OK God, where?’ Neil and I kept telling ourselves that God is letting us spend time wandering through the desert, kind of, as he is preparing our child.”
