SD Ag Labs carries on ‘Olson’ tradition

• New lab celebrates first year with open house Friday

BROOKINGS – Sometimes when life hands you lemons, you’ve gotta make lemonade.

Regina Wixon and her colleagues were among the dozens of Extension staffers, ag research station workers, laboratory specialists and university teachers who saw their professional lives slipping away when the budget ax fell in April 2011.

Draconian cuts forced on the state university system by the governor and the Legislature meant that Dean Barry Dunn would have to cut $4.7 million from operations at SDSU’s College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences.

Among the victims was the highly regarded Olson Agricultural Analytical Services Laboratory, which for decades had aided the state Department of Agriculture, farmers and ranchers, ag businesses and other SDSU scientists.
