• At least one commissioner concerned about loss of property tax revenue from Northwest Quadrant project
BROOKINGS – In light of the request for proposals (RFP) recently issued for a privately-owned apartment building on state-owned land – and a town hall meeting packed with people wanting to discuss it – the Brookings County Commission wants to talk about SDSU’s Northwest Quadrant project.
Commissioners received information from Brookings developer Dennis Bielfeldt recently regarding enrollment numbers at South Dakota State University and the private, upscale, contemporary-style apartment building it wants to build for upper-level students. The university issued an RFP for the building on Nov. 7.
Commissioner Stephne Miller said she attended the town hall meeting on the topic, held Nov. 12 by the newly-formed Brookings Advocates for Small Business (watch a recording of that meeting at www.youtube.com/Brookings-Advocates), of which Bielfeldt is a member. She said the meeting was informative and this project is “definitely something we need to keep our eye on.”
