Habitat retrenches

Posted: Monday, Oct 29th, 2012

Barbara Johnson has been on the job as executive director of the Brookings Area Habitat for Humanity for 16 months now. She’s grateful for the community’s continuing generosity, but Johnson says the local affiliate has been hit hard by the national economy – grants and donations have fallen off significantly. BROOKINGS – Fifty new homes. It’s a record any developer would be proud of.

But these houses – some new, some older buildings completely refurbished – have been built almost entirely by volunteers, helping Brookings Area Habitat for Humanity offer “not a hand out, but a hand up.”

The dedication of the milestone 50th house takes place later today, says Barbara Johnson, Brookings Habitat’s executive director. The organization broke ground for its 51st home last week.

Johnson reached a milestone of her own this past summer: she completed her first year as director of the Brookings Habitat affiliate. And she’s taking time now to count her blessings, thanking her many benefactors and the hundreds of volunteers in the community who have stepped up to help their neighbors.
